"Begin Again and Again" - Images for Episodes 133 & 134 (Mark Lord, Parts One & Two)

ABOVE: Pearce Bunting (Ham) and Maggie Siff (Clov) in Samuel Beckett's Endgame. Staged by Mark Lord for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 1998. Set and costumes by Hiroshi Iwasaki. Photo by Chris Lippa.

BELOW: An article by William B. Collins from the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer, dated January 7, 1991. Part of a series of articles about Philadelphia theater artists of the era, this article had many photos of Mark's work with the company of Hamlet in Sites at Bryn Mawr.

Above is a photo of Mark Lord and Aaron Posner in 1993, as they worked together on directing Shakespeare's Tempest at the Arden Theatre (which was then still at the space behind St. Stephen's Church on Ludlow Street). In the background is the actor Pearce Bunting, who was playing Caliban. Unseen in Bill Collins, whom as we discussed in the episode, was cast as Gonzalo.

A photo of the longtime Philadelphia theater critic - whom I've quoted often on the podcast, and in my book, accompanied his obituary in the Inquirer, dated May 15, 2014:

The other Philly theater figure who's passing we note in the episode is the designer Hiroshi Iwasaki:

Mark tells me that another tragedy of Hiroshi Iwasaki's passing was that so many of his own high-resolution photographs of his work over the years had been lost, even before his death, and during his final illness there was no time to reconstruct his personal archive.

I did come across several photos of his design work online, including this one:

In an email, Mark identified this image for me: "This is the first (of two) productions of Strindberg’s DREAM PLAY that Hiroshi and I did at Bryn Mawr. [The role of] Indra’s daughter was shared by 4 women: Maggie Siff is in the red scarf. The other Daughters were Leonie Casanova, (left), Zoe Chance, and (on the right), Slavica Naumovska."

Above: A newspaper photo of the ensemble of Mark and Hiroshi's work on Gertrude Stein's Pink Melon Joy at the Art Alliance (the former Wetherill mansion) in 1992.

Below: Maggie Siff, Juan Mora y Araujo, Charlotte Ford, David Warner and David Disbrow in the 2002 Big House production of Peter Handke's The Ride across Lake Constance. Photo by Hiroshi Iwasaki.

Finally, a photo from September 2004, the choreographer Amy Smith performing in Headlong Dance Theater's Hotel Pool.

"Like a lot of our ideas, it started out as a joke," said Smith, who was featured in the show. According to her, she and other members of Headlong, Including David Brick and Andrew Simonet, were at a conference in a hotel and thought "we could do it as a piece whenever we were on tour for other guests of the hotel."

In "Hotel Pool" Smith played a business traveler who gets pulled by "pool denizens" into a mysterious world quite different from corporate America.

What happened next? Well, you'd have to go to find out. "It's not Esther Williams," said Smith.

(Hotel Pool was later also performed in Massachusetts and Oregon, with Mark Lord appearing in the show as "The Businesswoman's" boss.)
